A Zodiacal Path of Self-Mastery

The year with its 12 months provides us with an outline for developing ourselves alongside the cycles of nature. Additionally, the Zodiac adds an additional framework for each month; inspiring us with different qualities and aspects through the themes, elements, and seasons. Together they introduce us to the Hero's Journey: The archetypal concept of transformational experiences faced daily and uniquely by each of us - every day, month, and year. We are all challenged to overcome problems, learn valuable lessons from them, and to refine our character through the process.

Through this Blog we define how the Zodiac highlights principles, lessons, and aspects of the psyche so that we can gain a fuller view of ourselves and one another. By turning our attention inward rather than outward we empower ourselves to become the heroes of our own lives.

The Hero’s Journey is the reorganization of our attention and purification of our thoughts.

The Purification of the heart and mind

At the core of all spiritual work: religious, "self help," or psychological, is the idea of clarity in one's hearts and minds - this is to see the world around us from a centered view so that we are not overly attached or needlessly reacting and suffering from external inputs. This effort is best introduced as the purification of one's internal negative thought patterns, biases, and feelings of hate and separation. In esoteric teaching it is said that before one gains wisdom one must have a purified heart; for knowledge is a responsibility and to have power over others without a moral center often leads to corruption, manipulation, and evil. I highlight this need for purification as it has been a key part of my own journaling practice these past five years. Writing brings us the awareness of our own thought patterns and helps us cut through illusion, it helps us to question why we do what we do. Writing helps us to track impulsive thoughts and decisions, witness emotional triggers, and to make commitments towards change. With this intention of purification I have improved my discipline and redirected my energy inward, helping avoid distractions and bad habits. Ultimately this has given me a greater level of discernment, non-judgement, and self-knowledge. This is the loving clarity to know one-self and what it takes to accomplish our personal goals; aided by a grounded state of mind.

A Grand Vision of the Self

The point is the journey and not the destination and so when defining our grand vision of ourselves it is helpful to remember that perfection is impossible and that what we can do is continuously re-align our thoughts and actions. Writing out our intentions, values, and goals; we can make adjustments as we go while keeping our vision clear. To begin it helps to define our internal compass: The questions and intentions that guide our way.

What is most important to me? What parts of my self do I wish to improve?

What do I wish to create, share, and experience in my life? What are the tools that aid us in this effort?

1. The Journal

This is the primary tool for daily reflection and alignment.

2. An Intentional Calendar

The use of the days of the week, the lunar phases, and Zodiacal months to organize.

3. A Holistic Practice

Balancing out our writing with embodiment practices like meditation, yoga, and exercise.

4. A Source of Inspiration

In the act of self development it is important to study books for wisdom and inspiration.

5. Creative Expression

The point of life is to express ourselves and so through relationships and art we fulfill the purpose of this work by inspiring others and making useful what has been helpful for us.
